A man in Iowa will not face charges after a deadly self‑defense shooting in Fort Dodge.

Police say Josiah Byram was attacked by Thomas Ahrens and tried to retreat toward his home. Ahrens pursued him, closing the distance, and investigators say Byram was forced to fire in self‑defense.

Byram immediately called 911 and remained on scene. Ahrens was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

After reviewing all evidence, investigators concluded that Byram acted lawfully.

Iowa is a Stand Your Ground state. Even though Byram attempted to retreat, he had no legal obligation to do so under Iowa law.
